It has been announced that Model Jourdan Dunn is the first black woman to grace the cover of British vogue in 12 years.
The 24-year-old Victoria’s Secret angel posted her February 2015 Vogue cover on her personal Instagram account saying: “I’m so Happy to finally say I’M ON THE COVER OF BRITISH VOGUE!!! ???????????????????? Thank you @britishvogue ,Patrick Demarchelier and Kate Phelan for making this happen and also thank you all for the Love and Support it means everything to me ????????????????????#2015YearOfTheDunn”.
Dunn was previously seen on Vogue’s 2008 cover, however, she was in a group shot alongside fellow successful models Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Eden Clark. The last solo black model to be on the cover was back in 2002 with fashion legend Naomi Campbell.
A household name and as one of the highest paid, most sought after models in the industry, it should not come as a surprise that Dunn should land a Vogue cover when her best friend, Cara Delevingne, posed for two solo covers last year alone.
The model, has recently become the face of the new spring/summer 15 Burberry campaign along with Naomi Campbell, is also a supporter of the Balance Diversity Campaign which endeavours for more ethnic model diversity in the fashion industry. Speaking to The Guardian Dunn said: “The people who control the industry say if you have a black face on a magazine cover it won’t sell, but there’s no real evidence for that. It’s lazy.”
Jourdan therefore seemed delighted to be given the modelling job on social media. Does this mark the beginning of more ethnic models on the covers of Vogue? Only time will tell.
