There was more than a touch of fairytale to the 2019 Met Gala, with celebrities battling it out on the red carpet, showing off their ‘campest’ looks and strutting their most vibrant and flamboyant frocks.
The theme was ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ and Katy Perry had us whistling ‘Be Our Guest’ in an outfit that resembled Lumiere, a candelabra from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

She clearly wasn’t the only celebrity using the event to live out their childhood fairy-tale dream as Zendaya transformed into a Cinderella-inspired gown that elegantly lit up like the Blackpool illuminations. We hope she sends the electricity bill to the costume designer.

Of course, every princess needs their wicked stepsisters. However, Kendall and Kylie Jenner looked less like the children of an evil stepmother and more like the daughters of Lloyd and Harry, of Dumb and Dumber fame. They made a colourful entrance, wearing pastel violet and fiery orange gowns which inevitably caught the crowd’s attention.
Cole Sprouse, meanwhile, was throwing out Woody from Toy Story vibes with his doll-like hair and makeup. It seems it is a ‘suite’ life for him as he arrived with expected love interest Lili Reinheart, who took drag to a new level as she rocked her Elizabethan, electric blue-inspired look.

Elsewhere, Ezra Miller bended gender appropriations and expectations in Burberry by wearing a masquerade-inspired look of a striped blazer dress, 60s styled wig and warped makeup of seven eyes, all identical to one another. The cherry on top was a timeless crystal corset which simultaneously fitted the theme and made it his own. However, he wasn’t the only one to challenge gender expectations as Michael Urie was both dressed to the nines and suited and booted in a classic suit and tutu-inspired gown which was bound to turn heads.
Meanwhile, Jared Leto sported a crystal body cover with a blood red suit, which fitted well with the freakish, identical replica of his beheaded head he carried round (we think someone has been watching too much Game of Thrones).

At the end of the day, you never know what to expect at the Met Gala, you have to expect the unexpected. As the world of fashion and appropriations develops we expect there to be even more outrageous outfits and costumes next year.
