Neon Saint Laurent: AW19 ready-to-wear collection

Anthony Vaccarello has once again wowed the world with his new AW19 ready-to-wear collection for Yves Saint Laurent. The show took place in a rather spectacular venue – underneath the Eiffel Tower – and models walked down a corridor of flashing lights, encased in a wall of woven mirrors. The front row this year hosted the likes of YSL newbie Ezra Miller, Salma Hayek – who is the wife of Francois-Henri Pinault, CEO, and chairman, of Kering – and of course the regular supermodel Kate Moss.

The first half of the collection channelled the classic YSL look: sleek, sophisticated and sexy. Although there was a very mono-tonal colour scheme, the garments were far from boring. One of the stand-out outfits was look four; a black top tucked into cigarette trousers, accompanied with a double-breasted crocodile print coat and black sunnies. The typically masculine attire was given a feminine twist with a pair of white heels and sheer spotted tights.

Other looks that managed to impress us were look 40 – a black sequin one-shouldered mini dress, paired with purple metallic heels – and look 46 – a black sheer bodice, again, tucked into cigarette trousers. Both looks were complemented with minimal jewellery.

Vaccarello provided a delightful surprise with the second half of the collection. As the catwalk descended into darkness, models entered the runway wearing glow-in-the-dark neon outfits – a colour scheme that is very unusual for a brand like YSL. The first look to catch our eye was a black and white zebra print one-shouldered dress, paired with neon green heels and white-rimmed sunglasses. Although animal print has become extremely popular within the fashion industry recently, zebra print is one of the less commonly used ones, so it was quite refreshing to see Vaccarello put it to use.

Marabou feathers, of various colours, also made an appearance in multiple of the outfits in the second half, including dresses and coats, as well as a black and white chevron print fez-style hat. Outfits were accessorised with contrasting belts in orange and green.
