New York Fashion Week: Alexander Wang SS16

What a way to celebrate 10 years in the fashion business than to have a collection shown at New York Fashion Week with celebrities such as Kanye West, Kylie Jenner, Nicki Minaj and Lady GaGa on your FROW!

Alexander Wang threw himself a night to remember when it came to presenting his SS16 collection on Saturday evening which continued with an all celeb after party with music by none other than pop sensation Tinashe.

Since the announcement that Wang’s contract with Balenciaga would not be renewed, he seems to have put a lot of effort in this new collection and certainly showed the fashion world what he is capable of.

The audience was positioned neatly in darkness to the right of the catwalk as the models descended along a very brightly lit runway against a white wall which would be used to showcase a short film at the end of the show. The music gave the whole room a very R&B 90s feel.

Taking a step back in time and returning to his old roots with urban style leisure wear, the collection certainly brought a new lease of life to the classic basics. Monochrome played a huge inspiration to the pieces with striped playing the part of the main pattern throughout the collection which was used in jackets, shorts and trousers.

The collection rocked a variety of fabrics, materials and shapes. Including a range of leather crop tops which had silver chain straps, giving the garment an edge to the simple look. A few garments featured a current trend of suede tassels, which were displayed on a range of long floaty dresses and some were teamed with a burgundy crocodile skin jacket or skirt.

The models looks were kept natural with next to no makeup and hair left naturally down and untouched. The accessories were long, dangly chain earrings and a few models accompanied their outfits with more leather anbd more chains on the clutch bags.

Wang also featured a number of outfits from his menswear collection that ran between the womenswear range. Some garments were styled with the classic Wang engraved hooded top; completing a perfect urban relaxed look.

A piece that certainly stood out from the crowd was a beautiful oversized camel coloured coat that fell gracefully over a long black satin dress.

The grunge trend soon changed into a delicate satin range. From long pastel pink dresses with lace to tops that had the 90s pyjama top look to it. This was definitely a nice touch to finish the SS16 range.

Once all of the models did their final walk of the runway, a documentary soon appeared on the wall showing all of Alexander Wang’s fashion achievements in the past 10 years. The words ALEXANDER WANG soon appeared onto the wall in bold writing while the designer ran out on to the runway in a very proud over excited manner as silver confetti fell from the ceiling in celebration of his 10 year anniversary in the fashion world. Here’s to the next 10 years Alexander!
