Newcastle born body confidence campaign hits The Clothes Show

The campaign is called Beautiful is ___ and was launched by a charity called the Friendly Development Charity two years ago.

They carry out work via their programmes, such as their roadshow which they take into secondary schools, although the campaign is expanding further to colleges and universities in the future.

The campaign also hosts a #nomakeupmondays on the first Monday of every month which invites women from all over to take part in sharing no make-up selfies.

The Clothes Show, an event which showcases the latest fashion, beauty and music trends, invited the charity to exhibit the campaign there as well as feature on a panel speaking to young people about confidence and careers.

Founder and CEO of the charity, Emma Oliver, said: “The main aim of the campaign is to challenge perceptions of beauty and to increase body image so that people can enjoy a positive body image.

“We have been invited to the clothes show to exhibit the campaign. They have quite a big educational sector where a lot of students come from colleges and universities.”

Mrs Oliver also said that there were “big plans for the future” which includes continuing with their roadshow of going into schools, colleges and universities.

Rachel Jobes, a blogger from Newcastle and who was present at The Clothes Show with the campaign, said: “The Clothes Show is a huge event and it was a fantastic opportunity for the campaign to be there.

“The students at the Clothes Show reacted really well. They were attending fashion seminars and came to us at the end to tell us what they felt was beautiful to them.

“I think one thing that stood out was when a tutor asked ‘what happens now after the students hearing this go out to watch a catwalk show with all the thin models?’ a really good question and very valid point!”

Anyone who wishes to donate money to the charity for them to continue the work they do can do so by calling the number listed on their website 07891 097804 or by texting a specific amount on 70070.
