In 1997, Belgian-born designer Olivier Theyskens, had left his studies behind to focus on his eponymous fashion label. He had already gained much experience in the industry, from heading two Parisian fashion houses to working for Theory, a New York-based label.
Known for high drama in his creations, the 43-year-old’s Fall/Winter 2019 collection is no exception. This look, worn by Chinese model Sijia Kang, harkens back to the 1940s period in fashion history, where hourglass shapes, created by high waistlines and with corsets, were particularly dominant.
The use of black throughout the outfit, including the earrings and leather gloves, pays tribute to the upper-class women of this era, who rarely showed skin. The buttons underneath the collar also contribute to the formal concept of this look.
Overall, this is a really refreshing piece presented on the runway – a moody, yet respectful tribute to an iconic time in fashion.
