Breaking news: Paris Fashion Week has officially been stolen, Valentino’s creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli not only sustained Valentino’s notorious reputation, with a mix of monochrome geometric patterns and gentle floor length furs, but they also pulled off one of the greatest fashion show stunts to date.
To the uplifting beat of Human League, Zoolander’s Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson in sheer blue steel style closed Valentino’s exquisite collection, it was a shocking moment to say the least, but at this stage in the season it was exactly what the doctor ordered, lifting the front row to their feet in thunderous applause and laughter. Total Godsend.
The appearance of the smouldering duo did in fact completely overshadowed Valentino’s collection, at least for two minuets anyway. Beginning with Op Art monochrome patterns clashed together in a way that only Chiuri and Piccioli could make elegant, showed that the exploration of sensuality and independence was definitely working. The show proceeded with flattering tunic style dresses alongside panelled leather tulle.
The collection flowed together perfectly and was surprisingly a lot more wearable than previous seasons; oversized jumpers were gracefully worn over floor length sleek patterned silk skirts and the attention to detail was outstanding, bringing elegance and style to the simple black military style jackets that were paired with thin midnight black belts embellished with a signature “V” clasp.
Before the big finale, Valentino pulled out all the stops (so we thought), with a number of delicate yet striking gowns. Exquisite garments fell from the shoulder of one model to be embellished with dragon motifs on the next. There was a mix of sheer pleats extenuating the waist and, a stand out revealing, apple red dress that could tempt Snow White. Once again there was a new chapter opened in the never-ending fairy-tale story of Valentino.
The ultimate twist in the story however was without a doubt the unforgettable entrance of Stiller and Wilson; wearing a coat over your shoulder will never be the same again.
