Yesterday, Dior welcomed us into ‘The Next Era’ of fashion with their AW22 show at Paris Fashion Week. Celebrities such as Rihanna, Alexa Chung, Anya Taylor-Joy and Jisoo attended the show, all wearing designs by Dior.

The ready-to-wear collection, created by Maria Grazia Chiuri, displayed a wide focus on trends of the past meeting fashion of the future by incorporating references to past eras of fashion through the use of corsets, trench coats and long pleated skirts, alongside new innovate technological designs.
The set design for the show signifies the past with dark red walls and flooring, accompanied by traditional portraits of women in gold picture frames. Gold elements were also incorporated into some of the outfits.
To begin, futuristic designs in collaboration with D-Air Lab were illustrated. The company aims to incorporate safety with fashion, and this collection certainly does so. A prominent theme of leather bike wear appeared to influence some designs, with brightly coloured bike jackets and gloves contrasting the rest of the outfit, which was simple and dark in colour. This is likely to be a nod to D-Air Lab’s history, whose founder created protective clothing for motorcyclists.

The show also concentrated on an elegant nightwear theme through a series of long gowns. First shown was a collection of flowing, chiffon dresses in bold colours including, golden, dark emerald, crimson and black. Ending the show followed three white dresses with loose-fitting silhouettes. The simple dresses were paired with extravagant neckwear and large rings, which gave these designs an almost goddess-like feel.
Corsets were a recurring feature in this collection, and they were showcased using various materials, from leather corsets with cut out detailing and soft denim to more traditional styles with boning to create an hourglass figure in many of the models.
The A-Line silhouette was also carried throughout a number of designs without the appearance of a corset, which references Christian Dior’s early work in the 1950s whilst developing the style to meet their current and future work.

Overall, it may be said that Dior has succeeded in creating “Iconic looks which become a space for innovation and experimentation” and are a workhorse into ‘the next era’ of modern fashion.
