Cool crochet: this summer’s biggest trend

Crochet is one of the biggest trends this spring and summer. Adding to the sixties, bohemian style, this enw modern take on crochet has already been making its way back into our wardrobes. It has been seen at various Spring/Summer 2019 shows from New York to Paris, including Alexander McQueen, Oscar De La Renta, Loewe, Michael Kors and Chloé.

The fresh take on crochet show clear style inspiration from the sixties and seventies, following icons such as Raquel Welsh, Nancy Sinatra and Twiggy. From the simple, white crochet dresses to fun and colourful crochet accessories, there is something for everyone to incorporate into their summer looks.

At Chloé, they took a more neutral approach to the trend. Chloé opted for a white crochet maxi dress with long sleeves, but to add a pop of colour, the model wore a purple bikini beneath. This is a simple look, yet it creates a chic, laid-back look perfect for a luminous day. The look was paired with a small brown cross body bag, showing that less is more for this look.

You can achieve a similar look to this for cheaper as ASOS Design have a white halter-neck crochet midi dress for just £30.

Alternatively, if you’re not into a head-to-toe crochet look, you can wear a long sleeve white crochet cotton sweater, like this one from Mango (£39.99). Even a smaller dose of crochet will keep you on trend.

Alexander McQueen and Oscar De La Renta also included darker colours alongside neutral shades for their crochet looks. Whilst McQueen had a more structured black crochet dress, Oscar De La Renta presented a loose, sleeveless, black crochet maxi dress with a few diagonal white stripes and a dramatic fringe hem. The pop of white brightens the look; if you take inspiration from this look, include white accessories to keep it fresh and bright for summer.

You can get a black crochet dress with similar fringing on the hem from Zara (£29.99). Pair the dress with white shoes and accessories to be bold.

It’s not all black and white though, there were colourful looks that graced the runways. For instance, Loewe sent multicoloured crochet accessories that really had a home-made aesthetic down the runway.
