The pleated midi: the item that will com-pleat your wardrobe this spring

There are some items of clothing that seem to be reinvented generation after generation, and this year it’s the turn of the pleated midi skirt.

Mariano Fortuny, the original creator of the pleating technique, wanted to emulate the drapery and style of Greek goddesses, and let us tell you, you can certainly look like a Greek goddess by rocking this season’s pleated skirts.

A whole array of designers have jazzed up their collections in the recent seasons, with fabulous folds and perfect pleats. For their AW18 collection, Balenciaga had models dressed in bright blue pleated skirts, paired with fluffy jumpers and biker chain necklaces – a weird but wonderful combination.

Simone Rocha also joined in with the trend by having her models give a sneaky peek of their dark and desirable pleats, hidden underneath vinyl trench coats. She has also released a baby pink version, with little bow accents on the hips.

Luxury fashion brand Joseph, took a traditional and classic take on the look by creating a two-piece tweed suit, featuring a pleated skirt as the lower half of the ensemble. Sportmax put a more modern twist on their version of the trend, by pairing their athletic-looking pleated skirt with a graphic high-neck top and retro bumbag.

There are many celebrity fans of the pleated midi skirt trend, including the likes of fashion guru Olivia Palermo and actress Jenna Coleman. One outfit shows you how to go for a more casual day-to-day style, with a chunky jumper, and the other look shows you how to rock the pleated midi at a high-class event.

For the casual look, we would definitely recommend a pair of trainers for an everyday style, and extra comfort. Although unlike Olivia, we probably wouldn’t be attending fashion week.

The pleated skirt trend has also swept across the high street and online stores, including Topshop, I Saw It First and New Look. They all provide gorgeous and sophisticated takes on the popular designer and celebrity trend, but with a considerably cheaper price tag.

Style the skirts with a simple black long-sleeved top and either your favourite pair of trainers for a casual everyday look, or some heels for a sophisticated nighttime look. Accessorise with a pair of statement earrings and your fave lippy shade.
