Vogue has revealed today there upcoming plans to celebrate the iconic magazines 100th birthday.
Vogue’s Editor, Alexandra Shulman, said on the Vogue website: “Vogue’s centenary year is an opportunity to celebrate the success of a magazine that has been the leader in the field of fashion, style, contemporary personality and lifestyle since 1916.”
Vogue began in 1892, when it was founded in the United States as a weekly newspaper. It was first aimed targeted the new New York aristocracy. Condé Montrose Nast bought Vogue in 1905 and gradually grew the publication. He changed it to a bi-weekly magazine and also started Vogue overseas in the 1910s. After his first visit to Britain in 1916, he created British Vogue.
The celebrations will begin in February of next year at The National Portrait Gallery’s landmark exhibition, Vogue 100: A Century of Style, sponsored by Leon Max, it officially opens to fashion lovers on February 11, 2016. Visitors will be able to see, for the first time, the breadth of photography that has been commissioned by British Vogue since its very first issue in 1916.
The fun then continues into March, as Vogue has commissioned a specific group of fashion houses (names yet to be released) to create edgy, limited-edition pieces that showcase the brands personal style and the iconic Vogue logo. The finished product will be put in selected stores by March.
By May the Vogue Festival will be upon us once again with an exclusive line-up of fashion leaders. The festival will take place on May 21 and 22 in Kensington Gardens, London. The weekend will round off in a spectacular gala dinner to wish Vogue a happy 100th birthday.
June will be the official anniversary issue, and will be released on May 5, so make sure to get your hands on it when it’s released as it’s sure to be a collectors item!
Fashion month next year will see limited edition “Vogue: Voice of a Century” published; with only 1,916 numbered and signed copies released, the book will celebrate the photographs, illustrations, interior spreads, features, covers and contributors from 10 decades worth of issues.
September will also see a BBC2 documentary broadcast to celebrate the centenary, opening the doors to the British Vogue offices, featuring those who work for and contribute to the publication. The pragmatic series will give viewers a unique insight into how British Vogue is produced, in print and online.
