The best & worst dressed from the American Music Awards 2020

Long time no see, red carpets?

The global pandemic  has meant all forms of social interactions have been put on hold and celebrities getting dressed up for red carpet events have become a thing of the past.

But that all changed when the American Music Awards introduced a socially distanced red carpet at their ceremony in Los Angeles, on Sunday 22nd November. The awards show saw the appearance of our favourite artists including GQ’s rapper of the year, Megan Thee Stallion and Dua Lipa who attended the award show remotely from the Royal Albert Hall.

Fashion North rounded up some of the best and the worst looks from the redcarpet.

The Best

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly — who made their red carpet debut together – both dressed for the occasion, labelling them as one of Hollywood’s hottest couples. Megan wore a beautiful emerald green minidress by Azzi and Osta with cut-outs, an asymmetrical neckline, a single sleeve and a ruffled detail that draped from the waist. Her look was accessorised with black Giambattista Valli sandals with gold embellishments along the ankle. Her boyfriend, Machine Gun Kelly, opted for an all-white Balmain jacket with a plunging neckline, exposing his tattooed chest and styled together with silver boots.

Attending via video link from The Royal Albert Hall, Dua Lipa left her WFH loungewear at home and channelled her inner mermaid with a stunning Versace minidress straight from their spring/summer ’20 runway show. The dress featured all over starfish-shaped embellishments, in shades of blue, green and orange, an gold embellished bustier and pink ruffled hemline. Her look was completed with metallic gold sandals and gold jewellery.

A running theme on the red carpet was silver embellishment, and some of those who opted for the sparkle trend have made their way onto our best dressed list.

Becky G, 23, dressed for the occasion in a Ralph & Russo one-shoulder white gown with silver embellishment down the bodice leading to a dramatic high-slit. The singer, who won the favourite female Latin artist award opted for silver jewellery and shoes to match.

Balmain beauty! Jennifer Lopez wore a glittery two-piece outfit from Balmain’s spring/summer ’21 collection, featuring a skirt with a serious leg slit and a low cut slinky midriff-baring top. The superstar looked flawless with her wet-hair look and a dramatic smokey eye, she looked like a bronzed goddess

Paris Hilton also joined the best dressed list for her head-to-toe silver mirror dress by Valdrin Sahiti. She channelled her a disco ball in this dress featuring a extreme plunging neckline and long sleeves with a sheer detail at the end.

The worst

Not everyone bought their fashion a-game to the AMA’s this year, one of those making our worst dressed list is the night’s host, Taraji P. Henson. The actress sported many looks throughout the evening, but the most notable is her red carpet choice. The long-sleeved Armani Prive minidress featured all-over sparkly sequins and an embellished collar and sleeves complete with fringe. She styled it together with silver Tom Ford sandal beaded headpiece, plus she added Tiffany & Co. diamond earrings. She also brought along the most important accessory of 2020: a face shield.

Another attempt at the sequined trend was done by Bebe Rexha, her Julien Macdonald dress featured a asymmetric neckline and extreme cut out with a super-high slit, looking extremely similar  to Jennifer Lopez’s Balmain look.

Doja Cat is one of the biggest artist of the year known for her trending songs and dramatic on stage outfits. The artist, who won two awards including best new artist, wore a brown Vivienne Westwood gown. The strapless dress with ruched dress featured an exaggerated sweetheart neckline with purple piping. The ruching and ruffling and super-high slit ( a common theme on the carpet) didn’t work against the unexpected colours.

Cassie DiLaura, an American actress, turned up to the awards show with a questionable colour combination. She arrived in bright red off-the-shoulder and one-sleeved asymmetrical top, which she paired with black leather leggings and tan heels which we’re a odd mix.
