Wear the sunshine: spring’s hottest colour and our best high street picks

By Abi Farebrother.

Yellow has had its moments throughout the years, but this spring, it’s taking over. Proving its dominant force, it’s been seen across the board in countless SS19 collections this year; from the likes of Brandon Maxwell, Maticevski, Oscar De la Renta, Carolina Herrera and Escada. It’s clear this cheerful hue isn’t going away anytime soon.

From the catwalks to the streets, the colour is being showcased in multiple tones and shades including pastels, metallics, neons and worked through striking prints. Pantone has announced a marigold called Aspen Gold as the yellow for the season, but its clear to see that its being taken across the spectrum in all kinds of ways, brightening up even the darkest of days with a presence that’s impossible to ignore.

Yellow is a bold colour that can be quite difficult to style, as its a colour that screams to be noticed all on its own. Colours like blues and reds can be styled as a neutral or teamed with almost anything, but yellow remains a bit more particular. The best way to tackle and overcome what seems like an impossible feat is either to wear it on its own, to wear with neutrals, or to clash it. To wear it on its own, I would suggest trying either a one piece like a dress or boiler suit or choosing a few pieces, like a suit and t-shirt but varying the shades and materials; for example, a canary two-piece suit paired with a pastel yellow t-shirt to break it up.

Yellow deserves to be in the spotlight, so to team it with neutral shades like white, grey and black will bring out the best in that gorgeous hue. Clashing with prints and contrasting colours such as greens and soft pinks can incorporate yellow into a fresh and funky look that is sure to get heads turning.
