One Direction then vs now: their style evolution

Here at Fashion North, we’re not afraid to admit that we’re huge lovers of one of the world’s best ever boybands, One Direction.

This week marks a whopping nine years since they released their debut album ‘Up All Night’, which features hits such as ‘What Makes You Beautiful’, ‘Gotta Be You’ and ‘One Thing’.

The album has sold over 4.5 million copies and has hit huge records including becoming the third best selling album in 2012 and the fastest selling debut album of 2011.

To celebrate the anniversary of the boys’ debut album, as well as taking the opportunity to reminisce on our childhoods, we’ve taken a look back at how the boys and their style have changed from then to now.

Harry

We think it’s fair to say that Harry has probably had the biggest change in style out of all of the 1D boys and he’s now become a gender neutral fashion icon. Back in 2011, Harry’s outfits often consisted of very low-slung jeans or pants (we don’t even know how he managed to walk sometimes) and a t-shirt and blazer. Although he is still partial to wearing a blazer on the red carpet, his pants have definitely moved further up his body, thank goodness!

Zayn

Every One Direction fans’ heart broke on March 25 2015, when Zayn announced that he would be leaving the band. At the start of his career, Zayn had a very all-American style and frequently wore baseball jackets and high-tops. Nowadays – when he makes one of his rare appearances – he opts for a more mature style, such as longline jackets, skinny jeans and a pair of boots.

Niall

Back in the day, Niall was a big lover of polo shirts, baggy jeans and chinos. But baby faced Niall no longer exists and as he’s grown up over the years, he’s tended to opt for more printed shirts (which we are a huge fan of), as well as more mature suit options for red carpet events.

Liam

When One Direction first broke onto the scene, Liam tended to wear a lot of checked shirts and was also a fan of the baggy jeans and chinos trend, like some of his fellow bandmates. Although he did go through what we can only describe as a mid-life fashion crisis in 2017 (google it and you’ll see exactly what we mean), he now opts for a much more relaxed, sophisticated and classy sense of style.

Louis

When One Direction first started out, Louis was regularly seen sporting a pair of braces with a t-shirt and pants, or a striped top (him and Liam were clearly fans of patterned clothing). But now, we can’t imagine seeing Louis in clothing like this at all. Nowadays he tends to go down the sportswear route, often wearing oversized hoodies, sweatshirts and joggers.
