7 trends for petite frames

Clothing

Fashion queens Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are a tiny 5ft, pop star Ariana Grande is a weeny bit taller at 5ft 1in and style icon Rachel Bilson tops them both at a mighty 5ft 2in. Okay, so these women are somewhat short in stature. But apart from standing at the adorably pint-sized end of the height spectrum, these ladies have something else in common – the ability to nail trends and look astoundingly stylish every time. If you’re a member of the petite girls’ club, have a look at these seven fashion essentials, which will surely keep you at the top of your style game this spring.

1. A-line skirts

The 60s trend was all the rage last season, and it’s likely to stay around for a little while longer. One particular piece from the swinging era is the A-line skirt – a classic, high-waisted cut that’s universally flattering on all figures. The stripe trend is high and mighty for this season, so try this one from ASOS. Or if that’s too loud for you, opt for this simple one in a beautifully spring-appropriate powder blue, and pair with a scallop hemmed crop.

2. Skater cuts

Versatile and ever-trendy, few items of clothing hit the fashionable mark like the skater silhouette. The skater is one that is fitted at the waist before flaring out, rather like a figure-skating outfit (hence the name). This classic cut can come in a variety of colours, prints and styles, and thus, making it one of our ultimate wardrobe staples. Pair this one with a black roll-neck jumper for a monochromatic daytime look. For a night out, try this high-necked one in a luscious plum or this one for a fun but sexy update on the LBD.

3. Vertical stripes

It’s the oldest trick in the style book – vertical stripes can make anything and everything taller, longer and slimmer. Try out the elongated print with this gloriously preppy pinstriped dress, or throw this sleeveless blazer over your outfit for a sleek and sharp ensemble.

4. High-waisted jeans

High waistlines visually elongate your lower half, seemingly adding inches to your height, and so are a godsend for petite frames. Go classic in these delightfully mid-blue denims (they’re in petite too!) or grungy in this ripped pair.

5. Crop tops

It might only be single-digit temperature figures outside, but the illusion of crop tops paired with high-waisted jeans or skirts can make your legs look as long as Karlie Kloss’. This cute cropped jumper paired with a patent leather A-line miniskirt is wondrously 60s, while this long-sleeved piece with its grid checked pattern and high neckline is very sharp.

6. Matching sets

Don’t shy away from colour and prints – they are your friends, especially in co-ordinating sets where the matching prints and colour help to streamline and lengthen your petite frame. This checked top paired with this matching skirt would look adorably co-ordinated, while this grey cropped jumper and knitted skirt pays homage to the monochromatic trend as well as keeping you warm during this cold North-Eastern springtime.

7. Fitted silhouettes

Body conscious cuts will help to slim and elongate your frame by defining your waistline and lengthening your legs. This cap sleeved dress is an ideal wardrobe staple with its streamlined style and contrast panels to give the illusion of a slimmer frame. For something that combines sexy with delicate, opt for this LBD with its gracefully exquisite lace sleeves
